Registration closes on March 27, 2009

Dr. John Matsui

Dr. John Matsui, Assistant Dean of Biological Sciences at UC Berkeley.

This event is focused on reviewing the successful retention strategies of underrepresented students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields used by UC Berkeley’s Biology Scholars Program. The symposium will be led by Dr. John Matsui, Assistant Dean of Biological Sciences at UC Berkeley, who is the director and founder of the highly successful Biology Scholars Program. Although the symposium is focused on undergraduate students, one workshop will include discussion of a new program integrating graduate students.

Certain workshops or meetings during the symposium are targeted toward specifically administrators, faculty, staff, or students.

The Biology Scholars Program

The Biology Scholars Program (BSP) at UC Berkeley includes 850 students – 60% underrepresented minority; 70% women; 80% low-income/first generation college attendees; 70% biology majors; and 30% non-biology majors. On average, BSP students enter UC Berkeley with significantly lower high school GPAs and SAT scores compared to non-BSP students. However, BSP students graduate with significantly higher final GPAs and higher percentages with a biology degree. Other key statistics are:

  • Dropout/dismissal rate: .15% for BSP students v. 3.4% for all undergraduates at UC Berkeley
  • Graduation rate of African American students: 93% BSP African American students v. 73% all African American students at UC Berkeley
  • Medical school admission (all ethnicities): 85% for BSP students v. 55% UC Berkeley & 50% nationally
  • Medical school admission (underrepresented minorities): 91% BSP students v. 56% non-BSP at Berkeley
