Graduate Student & Postdoctoral Professional Mentoring Program
Mentee Information and Application

Benefits for Mentee

  • Unbiased feedback on academic progress
  • Guidance with exploring different career options
  • Assistance when struggling in academic program and unsure of alternatives
  • Advice and experience with regard to writing journal articles, drafting résumés and CVs, and preparing for exams

Role of Mentee

Although the mentor will provide the experience and expertise, the mentee must also contribute to ensure a successful mentee/mentor relationship.  The characteristics and actions outlined below should help the mentee structure a valuable relationship with the mentor.

  • Determine best ways to communicate with your mentor (email, phone)
  • Initiate face-to-face meetings with your mentor on a regular basis
  • Prepare for meetings with your mentor by developing your own specific questions and topics to discuss
  • Develop your own career development plan to review with your mentor and update and revise it as necessary, especially when new circumstances or challenges arise
  • Expand discussions beyond work, if appropriate
  • Respect confidentiality
  • Ask for advice on decisions you are contemplating
  • Keep the mentor informed regarding your achievements and successes
  • Exchange CVs and/or résumés
  • Consider building a network of mentors, instead of relying on one mentor
  • Avoid actions, comments, or situations that may be construed as harassment

Mentor/Mentee Relationship

Success for the mentor/mentee in the mentoring program will, in part, depend on appropriately identifying expectations of each participant.  Though the mentor/mentee relationship will likely evolve over time, identifying current expectations will help to increase the likelihood of successful mentor/mentee matches.  The application is designed to collect information about each participant and elicit the mentor’s and the mentee’s expectations and goals.  CMDITR will use the information provided to optimize the initial mentor/mentee matches.
